Local Spotlight: Focus: HOPE

Volunteer Opportunity

Hope is one of the most powerful things we know as a species. If you can provide hope, you can inspire a drastic and lasting change in someone’s life. Focus: HOPE, a nonprofit organization operating out of our neck of the woods, was founded with hope in mind. Read ahead to learn more about how they’re making a difference in our community and in our country!

An Overview of Focus: HOPE

Mission: “Recognizing the dignity and beauty of every person, we pledge intelligent and practical action to overcome racism, poverty, and injustice.”

Values: Collaboration, diversity, empowerment, excellence, hope, integrity, people

Focus: HOPE was founded shortly after the impacts of the 1967 riots rippled through the city of Detroit. Initially, this organization was founded to “build a metropolitan community” on freedom, harmony, trust, and affection.

Today, this organization works as a large, multi-faceted organization to meet and exceed the standards of its original goal for peace and harmony no matter your race, gender, class, etc.

A Mission Accomplished in Parts

Education Program The founders and members of Focus: HOPE know that oppression isn’t singular or random, it’s calculated and systematic. So, too, needs to be the efforts that combat racial and class-related oppression.

This organization is structured to pulverize this oppression from the ground up starting with early learning programs and youth development. These programs not only help to educate children in the community but they also provide peer-to-peer support for their parents.

On down the line, this organization remains committed with programs like job training and community advocacy. These programs focus on stability and sustainability through job security, personal growth, and confidence in the workforce.

They still don’t stop there, though. This organization also strives to support seniors in the community with their Food For Seniors programs. They partner with organizations across the state to provide more than 40,000 seniors with food stability each month.

How You Can Spread HOPE!

Get involved in a great cause and help spread HOPE through your community by making a donation. With every $500 donated, they’re able to provide health screenings, income tax support, utility assistance, and more for low-income seniors.

Have more to offer than just a monetary donation? Volunteer with Focus: HOPE! Be sure to connect with them on Facebook to ensure that you never miss an opportunity to get involved.
