Classes

Highland Station House Fiber Artists

Knitting ClassesThis knitters circle meets every Wednesday at 10 AM. All that’s asked is a small donation when you attend but otherwise, it’s a free meetup for a friendly group of knitters. Your level of experience doesn’t matter. Come to refine old skills, learn new patterns, or start a completely new hobby. Of course, the most important part is to have fun with your fellow artists.

Creative Writing Appreciation Group

On the second Thursday of each month from 7 PM to 9 PM, the Creative Writing Appreciation Group gets together at the Highland Station House building located on the Council’s campus. All skill levels are welcome to join! Just bring ten copies of your written piece to share for a small group-run workshop, or sit back and enjoy everyone else’s work!

Events

Van Go Tours

Craft Market What is a Van Go Tour? Well, it’s an all-inclusive art tour hosted by Huron Valley Council for the Arts where you travel around Michigan to explore different art museums and installations. They’re scheduled on a monthly basis and travel to places like glass museums, river boat cruises, and the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum. Each Van Go Tour starts roughly between 9 AM and 10 AM, and concludes around 4 PM.

Art on the River

For the past eight years, the Council has held this Michigan-focused arts festival, which includes a fine arts and craft market, artist demonstrations, community groups, and live music. Come out for a day of fun with the community and support your local artists, some of whom work all year to sustain the Huron Valley Council for the Arts’ art shop.

Volunteer Opportunities

Art Volunteers

Huron Valley Council for the Arts runs almost completely by volunteers, totaling over 9,700 hours each year to maintain their programs. These hours come in many forms; you can perform office work, join a committee, help during a special event, or assist with school programs.

Don’t worry if you’re not well-versed in the arts or art history—as there is no knowledge requirement. All you have to do is contact the Council’s office manager to discuss what areas of the organization needs assistance. Current positions that require additional help include special events, concert helpers, and the education committee.
