Chevrolet Coolant Flush Service

A COOLANT FLUSH IS AN ESSENTIAL MAINTENANCE

It's important to maintain regularly scheduled maintenance for your Chevrolet to ensure that you not only get the most out of your vehicle but also to maximize its quality. A coolant flush is one of those essential maintenance services. There are many good reasons to have a coolant flush, but none of them are more important than to avoid having a vehicle breakdown. An overheated engine is a leading cause for breakdowns.

What is engine coolant?

Engine coolant, which is also known as antifreeze, is a combination of either ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or propylene glycol mixed with water. When tested, those ingredients must be able to withstand a temperature of zero degrees or less, but also temperatures above the boiling point.

ARE THERE ANY SYMPTOMS OF NEEDING A COOLANT FLUSH?

A coolant flush should be completed as described in your Chevrolet owners manual. However, typically, a coolant flush is completed every 30,000 miles. There are exceptions to this common rule, and your vehicle may show the following symptoms:

  • The engine's temperature gauge fluctuates between the normal and hot range
  • Seeing a small amount of green liquid (antifreeze) underneath the vehicle
  • Noticeable rust appearing near the radiator
  • A "maple syrup-like" odor coming from underneath the hood
  • Seeing steam coming from the engine

In most cases, these are indicators that an engine overheating is imminent, and you should schedule a service appointment immediately.

WHAT DOES A COOLANT FLUSH ENTAIL?

Over time, the coolant becomes dirty and contaminated. The result is a weakened cooling system. Having clean coolant also ensures that your heating system will operate at its peak level. When a coolant flush is completed, our factory-trained technicians in our service center will first release the old coolant. Additionally, the technician will test the coolant for any abnormalities. The cooling system is made up of the radiator, hoses, thermostat, water pump, and fan belts. A coolant flush includes visually inspecting those elements for vulnerabilities. Prior to refilling the radiator with fresh coolant, the flush process is conducted using a cleaning solution to eliminate any sediment, residue, calcium deposits, and sludge from the cooling system. After the coolant is replaced, our technicians conduct a final visual inspection of all connected parts to ensure there aren't any fluid leaks.
